Past Experiences

Reduce their hold on the present

The past does not need to be dramatic by somebody else’s standards to have affected you. Sometimes it is one event. Sometimes it is the accumulation of years of criticism, uncertainty, rejection, loss, bullying, difficult relationships or never quite feeling safe enough to be yourself.

You may understand it — and still react to it

It is common to know logically that something is over while your emotions or body continue responding as though it is happening now. Certain situations can trigger fear, shame, anger, withdrawal or a need to protect yourself before you have had time to think.

Therapy does not mean endlessly reliving the past

Understanding context can be important, but the goal is not to keep you trapped in an old story. We can work with what still seems active now: meanings you took from an experience, patterns you learned, memories that still carry an emotional charge, or responses that once protected you but no longer fit your life.

A pace that is manageable

You remain in control of what you disclose. Different approaches require different amounts of detail, and some focused work can be done without describing every aspect of a private experience.
